2013 Contest Overview

Harlequin and Mills & Boon Writing Contest

We’re the world’s largest romance publisher and we’re going global to find our next new writing star. One lucky winner will be offered a series book contract. Could it be you?

Here’s what you need to know!

First Chapter Submission Dates: Sept 23- Oct 9

Make sure you join us for the five day online conference running September 16-20. After that we will begin accepting submissions from writers consisting of the first chapter (under 5000 words) and a 100-word pitch. The pitch should convey story details such as concept, plot, characters, conflict and setting. Click on the submission form link and complete all mandatory fields. You must target one of our 20 eligible series.

All chapters will be posted immediately for everyone to read and add comments in the space provided. Remember…submit your chapter right away so more people will see it!

The contest is open to both unpublished and published writers residing in the UK, the US, Canada, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. One entry per person please!

Top 50 Finalists

In mid–October, Harlequin editors in New York, Toronto and the UK will select the top 50 best chapters from all the submissions received and request full manuscripts from those writers. We’ll be in touch by email and phone so stand by!

Top 10 Finalists

Harlequin editors will read and evaluate the full manuscripts from the top 50 and narrow the field to the top 10 manuscripts, which will then be posted for voting.

Public Voting: Nov 12-25

Yes, that’s you! Read all 10 full manuscripts, post comments and vote for your favorite. Help us find our contest winner.

Grand Prize Winner Date: Dec 4

We’ll announce the name of the first prize winner and newest author under contract with Harlequin. Second prize consists of an editorial consultation. Third prize will be a yearlong subscription to any series.
